Much to our delight and surprise, Mr.B’s daughters are with us for the full week right now. Normally we are lucky enough to have them every other weekend, but the pleasure of having them all week long is a new experience for us. They get along well with my son, but we’ve been having some interesting and very amusing ups and downs watching the kidlets interact and play together.
My son is not in daycare and stays with his grandmother during the week when I’m working, so he is very excited to have playmates around to share his trucks with. Only problem is, the trucks don’t seem to be the toy of choice for the girls, who are very much into pink and frills and glitter. It is an amazing clash of kid cultures in our living room at the moment. In fact, throughout the day it has seemed at times as though my son was the obvious third wheel of the group with his awkwardness of playing dress-up and other favored games of the girls. That is, until he discovered how to step into the role of “tormenting brother”.
For the first time in his life, I watched my son realize that he could hold the pretty, sparkly ponies hostage along with the baby stroller and force the girls to play with him by chasing him around our home. Even better, this caused the girls to scream and cry at his antics. He had found the true currency of childhood, plastic things made in China.
Of course, Mr.B and I quickly discouraged this behavior and redirected the kids to a more group friendly activity, but it was still kinda funny.
